[REVIEW] Jay Chou's New Album - On The Run

current song: 我不配 - Jay Chou

Jay Chou's new album is out and I hope you will all go and support him!

Jay is a fascinating man and his music is of an equal calibre.

I must admit, when I first got my copy of his latest album, I was too impatient to hear every song on his album and thus committed a great sin. I fast forwarded through each track just so I can get through them all and hear what they are all like. Not only was I not rewarded with the satisfaction, I was greatly reprimanded. In doing so, I did not appreciate Jay's new album at all and left it alone, feeling dissapointed in him.

However, picking it up today I realised my folly and I feel a great pain to think that the thought of Jay being dissapointing has every crossed my mind.

His new album is as per usual superb. But like all good things, you must take the time to let it seduce you.

1. 牛仔很忙 - Very Busy Cowboy
Very Busy Cowboy is the first song from his album to be released to teh public. It's a very different song combining some very Country Western Influences with nonsenseical lyrics.

I can't say that I've actually warmed to this. I do love the cheeky lyrics and the thought and experimentation behind it, but I still don't like it. It reminds me of feeling that I get from "My Territory", the only other Jay Chou song that I must confess to not liking.
Rating: 2/5

2. 彩虹 - Rainbow
This slow song has it's roots in the Secret movie.

Upon first hearing this, I thought it was too bland. Not until I actually sat down properly and savoured it did I pick up on it's bueaty. It is beautiful as a slow song, and it does remind you of rainbows, the only problem with it is that I wish he didn't use the tinkling sound effect -- that gave too much of an amatuerish glow to the song
Rating: 4.5/5

3. 青花瓷 - Chinese Flower Pot
This song stems from Jay's fascination in the Chinese Style.

I found upon first viewing too archaic and cringe worthy. However I've come to appreciate this song. It is lovely and oddly reminiscent of "East Wind Break". And I love how Jay Chou's pronounciation just suddenly became clear here XD
Rating: 5/5

4. 陽光宅男 - Sunshine Homeboy
This song reeks a cuteness that I wouldn't usually associate with Jay, but it is a very refreshing break from his ballads and rap.
Rating: 5/5

5. 蒲公英的約定 - Dandelion's Promise
I LOVED this song upon first hearing it and I still do. I am a sucker for good piano compositions and this one just brings tears to my eyes. The subject matter too, make it a lovely song.
Rating: 5+1!/5

6. 無雙 - Unparalleled
Just to show us that he hasn't forgotten how to rock and rap it out. A little too slow in my opinion, but I think on a whole, it's very polished none the less.
Rating: 4.5/5

7. 我不配 - I'm Not Worthy
I felt really sad after hearing this, I wanted to tell Jay that he will always be worthy. It's lovely and very reminiscent of his older ballads.
Rating: 5/5

8. 扯 - Pull
I love dancing to this. The girl accompanying him in the background is a tad annoying, but still, she's part of the effect so she's forgiven.
Rating: 4.5/5

9. 甜甜的 - Sweet
BUBBLE GUM POP FTW! It's once again rather cute, kinda like "Maltose" but it's a great track for summer.
Rating: 4.5/5

10. 最長的電影 - The Longest Movie
Jay Chou here is, once again, showing off his genius piano playing. He's also showing off his beautiful voice. It stirs my heart listening to this track. It's a great song and it's very
fitting to all the movies he is making now.
Rating: 5/5

TOTAL: 46/50
<3 <3 <3 <3 < / 5<3 (average)

REMEMBER kiddies, support Jay Chou by buying the real thing!
(I will try to post up an album for your sampling, but at the moment, my computer isn't letting me)

I'm glad I could sway you, but I can't offer any advice on which edition to buy. I'm lucky that my father travels to and fro a lot, so he bought this for me from China.

I've had a look on YesAsia. I can see how you are getting confused by all the "Taiwan" versions and "Taiwan Preorder" versions and I'm afraid I can't help you there. But it's true that they all have a DVD. I believe that's what usually happens. It comes with a CD with all the songs, and a DVD (used to be VCDs - those good old days) with some MVs.

Hakkai Approved

lol!

I almost fell outta my chair when i listened to the first track. i was like, 'what the heck? are you trying something new again, jay?' and of course the answer is yes. and then i watched the pv, which was pretty entertaining. yep, gotta love jay-style *^_^*

all in all, jay's new album featured several enjoyable songs. but i gotta say that my favorite album remains to be still fantasy.

still, good job, jay!!!

Phantom love

I'm glad Hakkai aproves XD

I agree with you. It's very Jay and it's a pretty awesome experimentation, but this Album is not his best.
